The Vegas Golden Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead with just over half of the game left. San Jose’s Brent Burns scored a quick power-play goal making it 2-1, breathing some life into the desperate Sharks.
Minutes later, San Jose took advantage of uncharacteristic mistakes and penalties by Vegas. The Sharks took the lead 3-2 heading into the third period.
Three periods of play wasn’t enough, but Vegas players and fans prematurely celebrated when Golden Knights forward Jonathan Marchessault thought he had the game-winning goal in overtime. However, the NHL ruled the goal was caused by San Jose goalie Martin Jones being interfered with. The score remained 3-3 after the end of the first overtime.
The Sharks with some new life, took advantage of the Golden Knights unfortunate penalties. Sharks assistant captain Logan Couture ended the game with a power-play goal in double overtime.
After the loss, the Golden Knights record is (5-1) in the playoffs. The second-round series is all tied up 1-1 and shifts to the SAP Center in San Jose for Monday’s Game 3.
