On Easter Sunday, the Vegas Golden Knights hosted Game 6 with a chance to advance to the second round of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Both teams started the game conservatively. The Sharks seemed to hold early chances on net but Vegas got their chances too. Mark Stone, Tomas Nosek, and Max Pacioretty missed three high-quality chances, leaving the Golden Knights scoreless. San Jose’s Logan Couture got his team on the board off a neutral zone mistake by Deryk Engelland with six seconds remaining in the period. The Sharks held a 1-0 lead after the first 20 minutes.

“We’re confident in the group we have here. We’re a confident group and a great hockey team. Just have to keep going and stick with it. I think if we keep playing the right way like we did tonight, I think we’ll get rewarded.” -Jonathan Marchessault, VGK Forward

Down one, the Golden Knights continued to struggle with getting their offense flowing. Thankfully, Marc-Andre Fleury saved every opportunity the Sharks had in the second period. Jonathan Marchessault got Vegas on the board at 11:21 with his third goal of the series.

“I thought we played great. It was an awesome game. Goaltenders were good at both ends. When it goes five periods and a 2-1 final, it’s a heck of a game. Just like we talked about before the game. Lots of energy, lots of fresh legs, in overtime a lot of people run out of fresh legs, but it was a heck of a game.” – Gerard Gallant, VGK Coach

Each team had man advantages in the third period but couldn’t convert keeping the game even at one apiece after 60 minutes of action. Tied at 1-1, Game 6 would be decided by a double overtime period. San Jose’s Hertl would add a shorthanded goal winning the game 2-1 and extending the series.

“Tomorrow is a new day. We have to get up and move on quickly. If it’s a win or if it’s a loss, put it behind and get ready for our next game.” – Marc Andre Fleury, VGK Goalie

With their win, the Sharks force a series-deciding Game 7 in San Jose. The finale is scheduled for 7:00 pm on Tuesday night.

The Vegas Golden Knights had a chance to take a two-game series lead last night in their home building for Game 4. The San Jose Sharks would be without two of their best players. Defenseman Marc-Eduard Vlasic was unavailable again due to an unknown injury, and center Joe Thornton was suspended one game for an illegal hit to the head on Tomas Nosek.

The Golden Knights opened Game 4 as they did in the previous two, scoring quickly on Sharks goaltender Martin Jones. Max Pacioretty scored his third goal of the postseason 1:11 into the game. Vegas would go on to defend against the Sharks heavy attack for the entire period but no shots slipped past Marc-Andre Fleury. With under a minute remaining in the period, defenseman Shea Theodore weaved in and out of defenders, dazzling the crowd with his first goal of the playoffs. Vegas held the 2-0 edge after one period of action.
“Yeah, Fleury played so well for us. I thought the first period wasn’t great for us. Second period we got better, but we know that when your goalie bails you out like that, you really need to go out there and play strong. I thought, for the most part, we did. We saw that they aren’t a team that rolls over and quits. They are going to play physical and try to get some momentum going into next game, so we expect a really hard game going into their building.” -Max Pacioretty, VGK Forward
Vegas tightened up and protected their two-goal lead in the second period. More than halfway through the period, Pacioretty lit the lamp a second time putting the Golden Knights up 3-0. The home team would skate into the locker room unblemished once again.

Vegas would tack on a fourth goal from a great individual play by Alex Tuch. Tuch gave Vegas a commanding 4-0 lead on his first goal of the postseason.
“The first period was busy. A lot of shots from the guys at the net. The guys were good, they blocked a lot of shots. I thought we had a great second period. Third period was a lot of power plays, didn’t have too many shots.” -Marc Andre Fleury

Vegas leads the best of seven series over San Jose (3-1) and have a chance to close out the series on Thursday night. Game 5 in San Jose is scheduled to start at 7:00 pm.
