9/21 – Adam Kutner’s Player Profile of the Week

If the Golden Knights first preseason game was any indications of what to expect, it certainly shouldn’t come as a surprise that we’re heading into another thrilling season. Vegas began the 2018–19 preseason with a goal 16 seconds into their first exhibition game. The man behind the goal, Jonathan Marchessault, also scored forty-one seconds into the second period. The top line forward looked to be in midseason form, which is great news for Golden Knights fans. Expectations are high but Marchessault is ready for the challenge.

“Intensity is going to go up. As much as you work out in the summer, nothing prepares you for hockey season as much as playing some games. Definitely going to be good, I think all the guys are excited.” – Jonathan Marchessault, VGK Forward

What We Know About Jonathan Marchessault

  • Undrafted Free Agent in 2011
  • Right-handed Forward

The 5’9, scrappy forward is a natural goal-scorer, with impressive numbers in the last two seasons. It took Marchessault a few years to find his way in the NHL, but Vegas fans are glad he found a home in Las Vegas.

“It was never easy. Everything was always hard for me… I’m happy of the path that I took, and I’m just happy to be here, and I think it’s going to be a great experience for our whole team. We started something great, and we want to keep going, for sure.” – Jonathan Marchessault

The 27-year-old forward has a combined total of 57 goals in the past two seasons.

In the postseason, Marchessault led the Golden Knights with eight goals, and second in playoff points behind linemate Reilly Smith. To get back to the Stanley Cup Finals, Vegas will need the same type of performance from #81.

9/13 – #OffseasonwithKutner Weekly VGK Updates

max-pacioretty-vs-vgk

The Vegas Golden Knights made another statement this week by trading for Canadiens star forward, Max Pacioretty. Vegas continues its summer of adding talented forwards with leadership ability. Vegas GM George McPhee traded and signed for another elite misfit player out to prove something. The former captain is primed to have a great statistical season after leaving his stress behind in Montreal.

We’ve added a couple of players in Stastny and Pacioretty that are very good two-way players, very good character people. So I hope that we are a better team than we were last year. Time will tell. – Vegas GM George McPhee

The big story this week is the surprise 20-game suspension of Golden Knights defenseman Nate Schmidt. One player that’ll need to step up in Schmidt’s absence is linemate Brayden McNabb.

“We knew we were contenders. We knew we could possibly go far in the playoffs and even win. We believe in that room and it’s contagious.” -Brayden McNabb

reilly-smith

Not many players are as steady and even-keeled as Reilly Smith. The Golden Knights top line forward put together arguably his finest NHL season in 2017-18. Smith and fellow linemate, Jonathan Marchessault, played a major role in William Karlsson’s Lady Byng award-winning campaign. It’s hard to imagine Vegas’ success without Smith’s leadership, or his 0.90 points per game average.

“We want character people… good leadership, great character and good work ethic.”– Gallant on Reilly Smith’s team influence

The 2017-18 NHL regular season happened to be career years for several Vegas players. Obviously, William Karlsson stole that category and flipped it through his legs. For other players, statistics didn’t show their true success. For the Golden Knights team, that player is Nate Schmidt.

“You go do what you can on your shift, and you rely on the next guy to go do his job on his shift, and hopefully that wear and tear will eventually push the opponent into making a play they don’t want to make.” – Nate Schmidt
